BBM : Bachelor's Degree in Business Management

Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) is a newly launched 4 years, 8 semester course of Tribhuvan University faculty of management. Each semester constitute of 16 weeks of intensive study. The program covers 120 credit hours.

Students who want to enroll for BBM Program must pass the CMAT examination. Seven Business Schools of Nepal offers Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) program with affiliation from Tribhuvan University.

The BBM program of Faculty of Management, Tribhuvan University is designed for aspiring business leaders and managers of the future. The BBM graduates are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and self-confidence to assist in effective and successful management, within constantly changing and highly competitive national and global business environment. This course has been designed with the objective of producing middle-level managerial manpower in the sectral areas.

Program Objective of BBM:

BBM program is designed with the following objectives:

1. Develop students’ skills in creative thinking, decision making, leadership, communication, and gain understanding of operations and change.

2. Develop students’ understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation, and effective management of business operations in a dynamic business environment.

3. Prepare students for professional life to work as business manager and entrepreneur.

Features of BBM:

Teaching Pedagogy

The BBM program is based on the student-centered learning approach. The general teaching methodology of the program includes interactive lectures, students’ presentations, case studies, and projects. The teaching faculty shall determine the appropriate teaching-learning methods suitable for each course.

Attendance

The BBM program is an intensive professional program. This program demands a very high level of commitment from students. Students are required to attend regularly all classes and presentations as required by the course. Students failing to attend 80 % of classes shall not be allowed to appear in the semester-end examinations.

Examination and Evaluation

The performance of students will be evaluated through ongoing in-semester evaluations and semester-end examinations. The FOM shall have the final authority in conducting, evaluating and awarding grades in semester-end examinations. The course facilitator (instructor) shall decide the grades in the in-semester evaluations.

Normal and Maximum Duration of Study

The normal duration and the maximum duration for the completion of the requirements for the various programs are as follows:

  1. Normal duration 48 months (8 semesters)
  2. Maximum duration 96 months (16 semesters)

Failing in Course

Students who do not qualify to appear in the semester-end examinations will have to reregister and retake the course as per the semester cycle. Students who are qualified but fail to appear in the semester-end examinations or fail in the semester-end examination can appear in make-up examinations as per the semester cycle. FOM shall organize chance make-up examinations in the last semester only where a student may appear in 6 courses of the earlier three semesters.

Graduation Requirements

The BBM program extends over eight semesters (four academic years). The BBM degree is awarded upon its successful completion of all the following requirements specified by the curriculum.

  1. The successful completion of 120 credit hours as prescribed with a minimum of passing grade in all courses with CGPA of 2.00.
  2. A minimum of grade ‘C’ obtained in the Project Report Writing Or Internship.
  3. Completed all the course requirements as specified in the curricular structure section within the maximum time period specified in the normal and maximum duration of the study section.

Admission Requirements

Eligibility requirements:

  • Minimum D+ grade in each subject of grade 11 and 12 with CGPA 1.8 or more
  • Minimum score of second division marks in 10+2, PCL or Equivalent in any discipline.
  • Students should strictly fulfill all the application form requirements needed in appearing the entrance exam.

Entrance Exam:

Students applying for BBM must fill in the application form about their detail description of personal information and past academic records.

The candidate selection process takes place in three phases which are as follows:

  1. Written Exam (CMAT test),
  2. Individual presentation
  3. Interview

CMAT (Central Management Admission Test) is taken by Faculty of Management (FOM) where students’ verbal ability, quantitative techniques, logical reasoning and general Awareness is tested.  The test is taken in the format of SAT exam.  The individual presentation and interview is taken by college concerned. After all kind of examinations are completed, the merit list is published by considering the three aspects.  60% of the total marks obtained in CMAT exam, 30% for the total marks obtained in plus two or equivalent level and 10% of individual presentation and interview. And then the students are admitted according to merit list.

MBS : Master's Degree in Business Studies

he Master of Business Studies (MBS) programme requires the students to study a total of 1000 marks. Fourteen analytical and core courses (700 marks), 2 specialization courses (200 marks) and a thesis or two seminar papers (100 marks) will have to be completed.

Objectives of MBS Program

The objective of the MBS programme is to enable the students to work as competent managers and to meet the demand of higher level managers in organizations, particularly in the functional areas of management Upon graduation, a student should be able to function as a manager in business, Industry, government and nongovernmental sector, within and outside the country, in areas like accounting, marketing, finance and general management. The MBS programme specifically aims to:

  1. Equip the students with required conceptual knowledge of business and management
  2. Prepare managers in the functional areas of management.
  3. Develop knowledge and skill of business environment in national and global perspective.
  4. Encourage entrepreneurial capabilities in students to make them effective change agents in the Nepalese society.
  5. Develop research capability in the students.

Eligibility

1. Eligibility Condition for Admission for MBS program

The student applying for admission to to MBS course must have successfully completed the BBS programme or a bachelor degree on any discipline from Tribhuvan University or from any other university recognized by Tribhuvan University

2. Admission Test

The Faculty of Management (FOM) shall conduct a Central Management Admission Test (CMAT) for the MBS level. Students eligible for MBS programme must sit in the CMT in order to qualify to apply for admission to the campuses offering the MBS programme. The FOM shall issue a score-sheet to each student appearing in the CMAT.

The test carries a full marks of 100 and it must be completed within 90 minutes.

Test Contents: There are 100 test items. The test covers five sections. The details of

the test are as follows:

Students must submit a CMAT Request Form to the FOM. Students must submit their application for admission to the campuses along with the score-sheet. Campuses shall prepare their admission merit list based on the CMAT score. The admission shall be strictly on a competitive basis. The applicants must enclose along with application form attested copies of: certificates/testimonials of all examinations passed; equivalence, transfer and character certificates, wherever applicable and Two passport size photographs.

Candidates selected for admission will have to produce at the time of admission original certificates/testimonials of all examination passed.

BBS : Bachelor's Degree in Business Studies

The objective of the BBS program of Tribhuvan Universityat the FOM is to develop students into competent managers for any sector of organized activity. The program is based on the principle that graduates will spend a major portion of their life in a constantly changing environment. Therefore, the student should have an  opportunity to obtain a broad knowledge of the concepts and reality- based skills underlying the operation and management of organizations. 

Upon graduation, students should be equipped to function as a manager in business, industry and government. The graduate should also have a variety of career opportunities in different sectors of business including entrepreneurship and create much needed jobs for others. 

The BBS program specially attempts to:

  1. Equip the students with the required conceptual knowledge of business and administration to develop a  general management perspective in them.
  2. Develop required attitudes, abilities and practical skill in students, which constitute a foundation for the growth into competent and responsible business managers.
  3. Encourage entrepreneurial capabilities in students to make them effective change agents in the Nepalese society. 
  4. Develop necessary foundation for higher studies in management and thereafter take up careers in teaching, research and consultancy.  

Degree Requirement

For successful completion of the degree, a student is required to take 27 courses and 4 practicum and graduate seminars (equivalent to 66 credit hours). Students are required to complete 7 foundation and analytical tool courses (18 credits), 10 core and functional courses (20 credits), 2 capstone courses (6 credits), 4 concentration/ specialization courses (8 credits), 2 electives (4 credits) and graduate research project, internship, seminars, and other projects (10 credits).

Degree Objectives

The main objective of the degree is to provide participants the opportunity to enhance their professionalism. It aims to imbibe a sense of strategic outlook to management problems in students. The emphasis, therefore, is on management as an integrated process and requires the students to develop a global view of economic, technological, cultural and political environment of business.

The program specifically intends to:

  • Develop resourceful individuals capable of addressing the challenges of the 21st century
  • Broaden the career prospects of participants by imbibing a strategic outlook in them
  • Enhance their initiative and employability by developing their professionalism

Minimum General Requirements

The minimum general requirements for the 4-years BBS programme are as follows:

1. An academic year will consist of a minimum of 150 teaching days excluding the days taken for admission and annual examinations.

2. The total instructional hours in an academic year will be 615 (150 days x 4:10 hours a day). For courses requiring field and practical works, additional hours of study will be required.

3. There will be a minimum of five periods (i.e. class hours) each teaching day. The campuses running morning or evening shifts will also be required to meet this minimum class requirement.

Attendance, Evaluation and Grading System

The final evaluation of students is done through the annual examination conducted by the Office of the Controller of Examinations, Tribhuvan University. However, for qualifying to appear in the annual examinations, students must meet the following requirements:

(a) The student must have a minimum of 70 percent attendance of the classes actually held.

(b) No student will be allowed to appear in the second year final examinations without first appearing in the first year final examinations.

The grading system in the annual examinations is as follows:

  1. Third Division 35 Percent
  2. Second Division 45 Percent
  3. First Division 60 Percent
  4. Distinction 75 Percent

Methods of Instruction

The campus offering the BBS program should use the methods of instruction which help prepare the student for the realities of Nepalese business, industry and government in which he/she has to work.

A combination of lectures, group discussions, problem-solving exercises, guest lectures, practical work, and fieldwork will be used as approaches to learning. The campuses are also encouraged to use the case method of instruction whenever required and wherever possible.

Eligibility

The candidate applying for admission to the BBS program of Tribhuvan University:

  1. must have successfully completed the PCL or 10+2 in business/commerce or an equivalent course from a Higher Secondary School Board, or from Tribhuvan University, or from any other University/Board recognized by TU.
  2.  Must have scored at least D Plus  (D+) in each subjects in 10+2 

Curricular structure

The Faculty of Management recognizes the need for both breadth and depth in the total academic pattern. Therefore, the curriculum for BBS degree comprises four separate and distinct course components:

  1. A strong foundation in allied areas of business such as language, economic analysis, legal environment, quantitative methods and research methods to prepare graduates to understand, analyze and comprehend the management concepts, theories and practices.
  2. Core business studies encompassing and integrating all functional areas to provide graduates with an appreciation of the diversity and inter-relationship of business and management issues.
  3. The opportunity to concentrate in one area of specialization such as accounting, finance, human resources management, management science, and marketing in order to provide graduates with some degree of functional expertise.

BBA : Bachelor in Business Administration

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) of Tribhuvan University is a special program in semester system of Tribhuvan University, designed to develop socially responsive, creative, and result oriented management professionals to fill up the middle level managerial positions in the rapidly growing business sector in Nepal and abroad. 

The specific objectives of this program are:

  1. Prepare students to take-up middle level managerial positions in the business sector
  2. Develop students’ skills in object-oriented business management capable of understanding and solving practical business problems creatively
  3. Provide professional management education with a blend of computer and management information system courses
  4. Prepare students to proceed onto post graduate level study in business administration

TEACHING PEDAGOGY

The general teaching pedagogy of BBA at Tribhuvan University and affiliated colleges includes class lectures, group discussions, case studies, guest lectures, role play, research work, project work (individual and group), assignments (theoretical and practical), and term papers. The teaching faculty will determine the choice of teaching pedagogy as per the need of the course.

The concerned faculty shall develop a detailed course outline and work plan at the beginning of each semester and also recommends the basic text and other reference materials for effective teaching-learning of the course modules.

Admission Criteria

The candidate applying for admission to the BBA program of Tribhuvan University must have:

Students who have passed 10+2 or equivalent examinations from recognized academic institute with second division (securing 45% and above) or 1.8 CGPA are eligible to enroll in this program. Successfully completed a twelve-year schooling or its equivalent from any university, board or institution recognized by Tribhuvan University.

Eligible applicants are required to appear in the entrance test commonly known as Central Management Admission Test (CMAT) conducted by the Faculty of Management. The test will follow the international testing pattern and standards. It includes the areas like:

  • Verbal ability
  • Quantitative ability
  • Logical reasoning
  • General awareness

There shall be altogether one hundred (100) objective questions in the CMAT containing twenty (25) questions in each section with a total weight of 100 marks. Student must secure a minimum of 40% in the CMAT in order to qualify for the interview.

Interview

Applicants securing above cut off point marks in the CMAT will be short-listed. Only short listed candidates will be interviewed and selected for admission.

Merit List

Admissions of the students in BBA program of Tribhuvan University will be strictly on the basis of merit list. Merit list is prepared on the basis of:

  1. 60% of CMAT Entrance examination
  2. 30% of marks secured in percentage in plus two or equivalent
  3. 10% Interview
